This recipe requires some of the very basic ingredients.
INGREDIENTS & SUBSTITUTES
- STRAWBERRIES - Fresh strawberries or frozen ones are good. In season use fresh ones. Else use frozen strawberries. To use frozen strawberries, do not thaw. - Corn Starch + Water - Mix water and corn starch. This is what will make the compote a little thicker, and give the right consistency. Or arrowroot powder is an absolute substitute
- Lime juice a little - keeps a balance of sweetness and tartness. just right, not too lemony.
- salt - enhances flavor
- Sugar - for a dash of added sweetness. I have used white granulated sugar. To make it healthier, you can use coconut sugar or a sugar-free substitute like erythritol or xylitol
Tools you will need is
A Saucepan
A knife to hull strawberries
A jar - to store the finished compote.
Making the Compote - Step-by-Step Instructions
Cook for about 5 mins; until the back of the spatula is coated. Remove from heat and transfer to a clean dry jar
Mash a few strawberries, while stirring. This will help in getting more of the strawberry flavor by releasing the juices into the compote
First, whisk cornstarch with water and set aside
In a saucepan, on medium heat. Add in the strawberries, sugar, lime juice, salt, and cornstarch with water.

Tips for the Best Strawberry Compote Every time
- If using frozen strawberries, there is no need to thaw them. And eventually will need lesser water.
- Chop strawberries into equal-sized pieces. Looks good and cooks evenly. You may want to make it chunkier by chopping it into chunkier pieces. Any size is good.
- Always mix cornstarch with water, and then add that to the strawberries. Adding only the cornstarch directly will give lumps.
- Over-cooking the compote will make a thick lumpy compote. so just about 5 to 8 mins are just fine.
- While cooking, mash some strawberry chunks and you are stirring. This will release some juices from the strawberry and add to the flavor.

Yes, Compotes can be frozen. Freeze compote in small batches for longer periods. So to use, you can defrost only the quantity you need.
Once you make the compote, let it completely cool and transfer it to a clean jar. You can then store them at room temperature for about a week.(assuming it has sugar and lime)
You can store it in the refrigerator as well and keeps good for about 2 weeks. And for longer periods store in the freezer in smaller batches.
Compote is served cold or at room temperature depending, on what you are serving.
To use as a filling the compote needs to be cooled completely.

Easy Homemade Strawberry Compote Filling & Topping
Equipment you will need
Ingredients
- 450 grams Strawberries (frozen or fresh pitted )
- 60 grams granulated white sugar
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
- 1 tablespoon cornflour
- 240 ml water
Instructions
- Measure the ingredients
- Hull and cut the strawberries
- mix water and corn starch. set aside.
- In a saucepan on medium heat, add the strawberries, sugar, lime juice, water and cornstarch and let is simmer for about 5 mins
- While it is cooking, Keep stirring, and with a help of a spatula, mash some strawberries. helps in releasing juices and elevate the strawberry flavour
- Once the compote is boiling. switch off heat.
- Let it cool completely before storing in the refrigerator or using.
- Store them in air tight glass jar
Notes
- STRAWBERRIES- use any type of strawberries fresh OR frozen. While using frozen, reduce the water to ½ a cup
- SUGAR - the sugar amount can be adjusted, start with the amount given in the recipe and you can go upto 100 grams. If using coconut sugar, the colour will be a little dull. But thats ok.
- CONSISTENCY - you can adjust the compote's consistency. by reducing the water. for thicker compotes (for cake fillings) while cooking. To adjust consistency and make it more like a syrup, then add in a few tablespoons of hot water.
